Target Audience

This activity is intended for psychiatrists and treatment team members in the clinical setting interested in reviewing and learning about medical comorbidities associated with psychiatric illness and various treatment options.

Statement of Need

The program will review issues surrounding the management of severe and persistent psychiatric illness with comorbid medical conditions. The panel of physicians consisting of psychiatrists and an endocrinologist will present case studies that are designed to promote discussion on the appropriate management of these patients. Risk-vs-benefit analysis will be thoroughly explored for each case in the context of balancing functional outcome goals vs. risks of weight gain and/or hyperglycemia. Risk factors for diabetes as well as management resources will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

·         Better define treatment effectiveness in the mentally ill patient

o        Control of psychiatric disorder

o        Management of medical comorbidities

·         Enhance awareness of the prevalence of metabolic problems in patients with chronic psychiatric illness

·         Review care guidelines and treatment options, including therapeutic lifestyle changes
